Candle Safety.

A few simple habits for a safe, beautiful burn, every time.

Last updated October 12, 2026

Always
  • Never leave a burning candle or a warmer unattended.
  • Keep candles and warmers out of reach of children and pets.
  • Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything that can catch fire.

Before you light

  • Trim the wood wick to about 1/8 inch before every burn. Gently break off any charred wood with your fingers or a wick trimmer once the candle has cooled.
  • Remove any packaging, labels or loose debris from the top of the candle.
  • Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, vents, fans and open windows.
  • Keep at least 3 inches between burning candles, and keep them away from curtains, books, paper, plants, decorations and anything else that can catch fire.

While it’s burning

  • On the first burn, let the candle burn for about 4 hours so the melted wax reaches the edges of the glass. This helps it burn evenly every time after.
  • Don’t burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Let it cool for at least 2 hours, then trim the wick before relighting.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it’s lit or while the wax is liquid.
  • The glass gets hot. Don’t touch it during or right after burning.
  • If the flame grows too large, flickers repeatedly or smokes, extinguish it, let it cool, trim the wick and relight.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris.

When to stop

  • Stop using your candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains in the bottom of the glass. Burning past this point can overheat the glass.
  • Never use water to put out a candle. Use a snuffer, or carefully cover it with the lid if one is included.
  • Don’t use the glass if it’s cracked, chipped or damaged.

Wax melts

  • Use wax melts only in a warmer designed for wax melts, and follow the warmer manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Never leave a warmer on unattended, and unplug it or switch it off when you’re not using it.
  • Place your warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface, out of reach of children and pets.
  • Melted wax is hot. Don’t touch it or move the warmer while the wax is liquid.
  • Wax melts are not food. Keep them away from children and pets, who may mistake them for treats.
